The Guard (2011)

I am pretty much a jerk—or at least when it comes to watching movies. I don’t mean to have little patience with films (especially those that are supposedly “good”)– I just can’t help it. Sometimes I wonder if my attention span has shrunk (three sizes too small) or if somehow I have come to appreciate certain films (mostly critically acclaimed ones) less and less. The problem has to be me, right? I mean, it can’t be the films.

For months, I have been excited for The Guard to come out on DVD. The trailer looked interesting and it stars Brendan Gleeson. Now, I’ve always had a soft spot for Mad-Eye Moody, so naturally the film caught my eye. Last Friday, my husband and I settled in for a movie night with this film as the feature presentation. We didn’t last very long.

The Guard stars Gleeson as cop in a small Irish town. He has an unconventional way of dealing with crimes and handling the locals, but it seems to work. However, when an FBI agent (Don Cheadle) comes to town on the heels of some international drug dealers, the two law enforcement officers clash.

Sadly, I can’t say more about the plot than that– we didn’t make it very far. I can’t exactly place my finger on what about The Guard didn’t appeal to me, but I couldn’t get into the film. I was all up for watching Gleeson wise-crack his way through the movie, however my impatience soon overcame my fondness for Professor Moody.

Admittedly, my husband was the first to call it quits with the film. Perhaps if I was watching this by myself, I could have powered through—and maybe even enjoyed it. And I know I could easily pop the DVD into the player and finish it, but I haven’t yet (nearly a week later). I’ve been trying to be “good” about my queue and not allow DVDs to sit at home for too long, so it is “good-bye” to The Guard. I think it deserves a better home than mine.

Thanks for reading and have a fantastic day!

  1. It was… boring. Gleeson was wisecracking and all, but not in an entertaining sort of way.

I was so disappointed 🙁 I really wanted to like it. Sigh. Maybe I will just watch one of his HPs or In Bruges again 🙂
