MonsterQuest (2007-2010)

What can I say? I am a sucker for monsters. I used to read up on the Loch Ness Monster and I would pore for hours over any ghost story I could get my hands on. I’m just a nerd for the unknown, I suppose. It shouldn’t come as a shock, then, that Netflix has started to recommend supernatural shows to me. One such series is MonsterQuest.

MonsterQuest is a History Channel series that tries to uncover the “truth” behind creepy legends. The show often involves people sharing their experiences about the legend-of-the-week, some mediocre reenactments, and quite typically a polygraph test or two. In short, it’s basically like Ghost Hunters only with monsters.

Now, due to my generous nature (and obsession with moving pictures) I like to give just about any show a chance. And so, through MonsterQuest I learned about American Werewolves in Wisconsin (they have an accent and an affinity for cheese), Gigantic Killer Fish, and Vampires. I started to watch Birdzilla but couldn’t bring myself to watch the entire episode. I have my standards, people.

Overall,  I was disappointed by MonsterQuest. Being that it was a History Channel production, I assumed the show would discuss the history behind some of these legends and perhaps offer up feasible alternate explanations. Instead, MonsterQuest didn’t seem to bring anything new to the table. It is a great idea for a show, but browsing through the episodes many of the topics seemed very similar to each other (Giant Squid, Giant Bear, Giant Killer Snakes, Giant Killer Fish, Giant Killer Fish II).

Perhaps I should have watched more than a handful of episodes before writing this review, although in my defense I watched a few from each season. However, I just did not get into this show as much as I would have thought (or as much as Netflix would have guessed either). I guess it’s like the old saying goes: you win some, you lose some.

Thanks for reading and have a fantastic Monday!
